JJ Virgin

JJ Virgin knows from personal experience that the most inspirational leaders and entrepreneurs are those who went through hard times and came out stronger. JJ wants to make 1 billion people healthy, and she’s built health juggernaut around her Virgin Diet and coaching program for health entrepreneurs – and it could have been very different. When her son Grant was near death after a hit-and-run, JJ pushed through with tenacity, learning in that devastating moment and in the days after the accident that there is strength in vulnerability.

Show Notes

What would you do if your child was barely clinging to life in a coma after a hit-and-run and doctors were telling you there was no hope?

Many people would collapse in that moment, and ignore their own health and wellness by not eating or sleeping or taking care of themselves.

JJ Virgin chose a different path: “I had to remain my best self to be there for Grant…How could I truly show up and fight for Grant if I was collapsing.”

JJ Virgin knows from personal experience that the most inspirational leaders and entrepreneurs are those who went through hard times and came out stronger. She learned to get out of her comfort zone, be vulnerable in asking for help, and as she fought for her son, she also wrote the first of four New York Times bestselling books from his hospital bedside.

Now she’s on her moonshot mission to make 1 billion people healthy, having built a healthcare juggernaut around her Virgin Diet and coaching program for health entrepreneurs.

In this episode we talk about what it takes for a women entrepreneur to overcome adversity, and better yet, leverage it.

“After you almost lose a child, you see things differently. Little things no longer feel like herculean battles,” she says. “We often forget how crucial health and wellness are until we don’t have them, or face a seemingly insurmountable obstacle where we most need to be at our best.”

We talk about how it’s easier to play BIG than small (“there is less competition with a big moonshot”), and why JJ knows she’s playing too small if she’s feeling comfortable – because all the big entrepreneurial breakthroughs and personal growth moments happen when we’re outside our comfort zones.

Here are some of JJ’s tips for women in business:

  • The Rubber Band Trick: Every time a negative thought, limiting belief or something bad comes up, snap the rubber band around your wrist.
  • Making Money: JJ’s coach had her write a list of everything she ever wanted. Don’t make it small: think big, even outlandish. “It’s an exercise in expanding what you think is possible,” she says.
  • Do One Thing A Day that Scares You: To me, I look at life, and I know when I get to a point that something is not scaring me; then I’m playing small again.”
  • Put Yourself First: You cannot BE the change you want to see in the world if you put yourself last.
  • Automate, Delegate or Delete: Decide what you do NOT need to do. Don’t do it yourself; double down on what matters most, what only you can do.
  • Get a Coach: This was the “biggest turning point in my life”.
