Let’s face it. There is a lot of “infobesity” out there. A lot of info-sugar and empty information calories – and in all the ADD that results, it is hard for entrepreneurs and thought leaders to stand out from the crowd.
The challenge for all of us is to inspire intrigue – and Sam Horn is an “intrigue expert”.
Author of the bestselling books TongueFu, POP!, and Got Your Attention?, Sam knows how to raise eyebrows – helping entrepreneurs, business owners and thought leaders achieve the stand-out influence and impact they desire.
Without inspiring intrigue, it’s hard to inspire customers to buy from you, people to follow you, talented team members to flock to you, or investors to invest in you. Sam helps her clients, including many female entrepreneurs, craft one-of-a-kind TED talks, investor pitches, books and brands that scale their influence.
We talk differentiation, because as Jack Welch said, “if you don’t have a competitive advantage, don’t compete”.
Here are some of Sam’s tips for women in business:
- The Three Question Pitch: Turn a monologue into a dialogue with “did you know” questions to both learn about who you’re talking to and establish the problem, then follow with an “imagine” to get to the solution, then follow up with, ”you don’t have to imagine it because we’re already doing it” – and come with proof!
- Don’t Over Explain: Sometimes women try too hard, especially if we’re a bit older and come from a generation where we had to fight for a seat at the table. So we pile on with too many facts, data, and more, but “if we’re long we’re gone”, says Sam.
- Anxiety means ‘Not Knowing’: So surprise and delight busy people by keeping it short and telling them how long you’ll take in advance.
- Tower, Don’t Cower: In a pitch, stand up, and stand tall, speak in lower tones and authoritatively (don’t end with a question mark inflection on your sentences. Look like you can run a $1bn company.
